 Rev. Edmund Ely helped establish mission schools in Sandy Lake, Fond du Lac and La Pointe on Madeline Is. in 1833 - 1839. In 1854 he and his spouse crossed from Superior and landed about where 42nd. Ave. W. is today. Along with the Wheeler family and Merritt family established Oneota Township. Ely peak is named for him between Oneota and Fond du Lac. The town of Ely is not.
