Supt. Robert Denfeld, (High School Namesake) in 1913 stated that teachers must stop 'flogging' their students. Flogging was considered boxing of ears and face slapping. A concern was that discipline may slip in the school system. If a parent requested that the school discipline their child the discipline must be carried out by the building principal and not by other staff members.
