 The first of ten blast furnaces was lit in Nov 1915. Â At one time the Morgan Park plant employed 5000 people (WWII). Â The plant closed for good in 1979. The towns of Gary, named for the founding chairman of US Steel and Morgan Park, named for the US Steel President were company towns along with New Duluth that were built to house employees.
